Homemade Pork 'Banger' Patties

Our Eskort Family Recipe runner-up makes her own pork patties – find out how she adds that special touch to homemade burgers

Our judges sampled hundreds of #JustDelicious dishes but the mouthwatering impression these pork banger patties made stayed with them.

The winner of the second prize in the YOU Eskort Family Recipe, Mayenziwe Nombela, shared how her family enjoys their burgers and we’re definitely adding her dish to our recipe collections.

Mayenziwe got the clever idea of using pork bangers to make her burger patties, saving a lot of time. The patties can be used in a variety of ways too, for example served as a finger lunch with a dip or to please the children with homemade hamburgers, says YOU food editor Carmen Niehaus.

“I’m so passionate about food,” runner-up Mayenziwe says. “If I buy the magazine, first thing I go to the food pages and even on social media.”

Asked why she chose to enter her pork patties recipe Mayenziwe added, “I was inspired by the way my family enjoys it at home when I make it. It also makes a nice snack when you have visitors and it’s always a winner even for snack platters when we go on picnics.

“I was so delighted to come second in the whole of South Africa, it’s such an honour.”

For sharing her recipe and for coming out tops, Mayenziwe won a R1 000 Spree voucher, as well as a copy of the Eskort 100 Years 100 Recipes book and a digital subscription to YOU magazine.

Her recipe will also be featured in an October issue of YOU.

Here’s how to make your own Pork banger patties!

Preparation: 20 min
Cooking: 10 min each side
Makes: 12 patties



500 g

Eskort Gold Medal Pork Sausages (bangers)

15 ml


15 ml



medium onion, finely chopped


red pepper, seeded and diced

250 ml

dry breadcrumbs


large eggs, lightly beaten

15 ml


5 ml

Worcestershire sauce

60 ml

finely chopped parsley


garlic salt and black pepper


extra dry breadcrumbs for rolling in


oil for frying

To serve



creamed cottage cheese with chives


  • Cut open pork bangers (sausages) and take out the filling.

  • Heat 15 ml olive oil and 15 ml butter in a medium skillet over medium heat, fry the onion and pepper for 5 minutes and set aside.

  • Mix all the ingredients, except the extra breadcrumbs, together in a mixing bowl.

  • Form patties using your hands and roll in extra breadcrumbs.

  • Heat the oil in a pan and fry a few patties at a time about 8 minutes a side or until done.

  • Drain on paper towelling.

To serve

  • Serve with the cottage cheese.

And it’s all in the seasoning, it seems. Our home cook shared a special tip:
“You can add chopped green chillies to your mixture. Any fresh herb you like can be chopped and added too.”
